Designing cups for Straffekaffe.

Our collaboration with the Norwegian Correctional Service (aka the prisons of Norway) started with the design and development of coffee cups - and setting up the new ceramic production unit at Hustad prison where the cups are being made. The goal of our collaboration projects is to strengthen the work activities - that are mandatory for the inmates - by designing products that are attractive to customers in both the prison shops and external shops.

The ceramic cups were designed to go together with the production of coffee from Bergen prison. Straffekaffe translates to “sentencing coffee”.

We were responsible for planning the new ceramic workshop at Hustad prison, both floor plans and equipment, and also for the initial training of the staff.

We designed coffee cups that are possible to produce for unskilled workers, since they do not need a very high level of precision to achieve a good result. The clays and glazes we chose for Hustad prison are easy to work with, and there is no need for expensive production equipment.
