The short story:
Two designers started their own very small factory in Norway in 2014, to make plates for some of the finest restaurants in the world.

Odd Standard was founded by Constance and Tonje in 2014. We are both Norwegian product designers with an extensive background from development and production of tableware. We were brought together by a common fascination for how tableware products could enhance the experience of eating, and an ambition to explore the possibilities that different materials and techniques offer.

In 2014 we left our jobs in Figgjo (Norwegian porcelain tableware manufacturer) to start our own factory, where we could make all the decisions on our own. We wanted to make products that were both normal and strange (which is reflected in our name) and in several different materials - and we knew from the early start that our market would be very international.

Our ceramic microfactory.

All our ceramic products are made in our microfactory in Stavanger, Norway, a mix between exploration and efficiency, between pushing borders and pushing production capacity. We work with around 20 different clays and 150 different glazes, and a wide range of production techniques - some of which we have invented ourselves. Our production spans from the very odd to the more standard; from ceramic hand-cut branches to round plates with a wide rim.

The Odd Standard team.

In addition to founders Constance and Tonje, Odd Standard is currently manned by two gals; Tuva and Lene. All of us have a background as designers, which is good since we spend a fair part of our day working with our hands rather than dwell in front of a computer. Confused? Well, in our world design and production are not two separate processes, they are highly integrated.

Our stone makers.

Located in the deep forests of Finland, soap stone experts Hukka Design have been making stone plates for us since the very beginning of Odd Standard. The Rocky bowl was the first product they made for us - and actually our first official product! The factory combines modern production technology with handmade craftmanship when shaping the stones (which are actually 2,8 billion years old) into plates and bowls.

Our recycled glass makers.

All the glass bottles and jars the Norwegian population pop in their recycling bins ends up at the Sirkel Glass facility in Fredrikstad. To explore and exhibit the potential of recycled glass, they established their own glass studio - Studio Sirkel - who we have worked with since their very beginning.

Our clear glass makers.

We did our first project together with the girls at Formbar glass studio in Haugesund in 2018, when collaborating on tableware for the restaurant Rest in Oslo. Today they make our clear glass products, and a bunch of custom productions.

Our wood makers.

The most recent addition to our very fine gang of makers is wood specialist Tingbø, a workshop a bit south of Stavanger who specialize in custom kitchen and furniture.

Our UK team.

We have been working together with Kinn Collective from before they even started! We met Mathew Froggatt, head and heart of Kinn Collective, over a fancy dinner in London back in 2016 and we haven’t looked back since. Mat, Laura and Lucie are doing a fabulous job at representing Odd Standard in the UK, they know almost everything there is to know about us, and they have a large selection of our samples

Our team USA.

Ever since our first conversation with Laureen and Hector of Kiln Editions, we knew it was a match; they simply see the world of tableware in the same way as we do. Located in NY and LA, they have a wide selection of our samples.
